WHO ARE WE?

CSTA Rhode Island was established in 2012 as your local computer science community.  This chapter was built to connect you with other computer science teachers, provide professional development to help you improve your craft, and connect your local voice to the national computer science education community.

 
 

Your CSTA Rhode Island Leadership Team:

 

President

Joe Mazzone, a Rhode Island College graduate, is a dedicated educator focused on improving career and technical education and Rhode Island’s workforce development. His focus is on developing students for success in the career areas of Engineering and Information Technology. Joe dedicates much of his time to computer science education and supports the CS4RI initiative, the Computer Science Teachers Association of Rhode Island, and serves as Technovation RI’s Regional Ambassador. He was also a member of the RI computer science standards advisory team, who developed CS standards for the state.

 

Joe enjoys empowering students to succeed. He has mentored many student organizations such as SkillsUSA, FIRST robotics, Technovation, TSA, and Women in Technology groups. Joe currently works at his high school alma mater, Davies Career and Technical High School. Davies is a state-operated LEA governed by an independent, business-led Board of Trustees. It is located in Lincoln, Rhode Island and serves students from primarily six sending districts, three urban and three suburban. Joe looks forward to contributing to the continual improvement of Davies, the school that inspired him to become an educator.

 

Vice President

Michael Deslauriers graduated from Rhode Island College in 1996 with a BA in Secondary Education Mathematics. He received his Master’s in Arts in Teaching Mathematics from Providence College in 2000. Michael saw the need for students to learn Computer Science earlier than most people so he started an AP Computer Science A course at Smithfield High School in September 2010. After a couple of years of all boy classes, he started an Exploring Computer Science Semester Course to get female students interested in this field. In the fall of 2016 he started teaching an AP Computer Science Principles Course to get even more students interested. Michael also helped establish the CSTA Rhode Island Chapter. He runs several after school clubs such as Girls Who Code and an App Inventor Club.  In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and 2 children. He enjoys fishing, sailing, volleyball, biking, hiking and golf.

Aimee Duarte has been teaching Interactive Digital Media at the Cranston Area Career & Technical Center since 1999. This three year program includes topics such as web design, game design and development and animation. I am always pushing my students to be creative, problem solve and work as a team. I love to watch their faces when they see their hard work pays off after I have guided them a little to figure something out or make improvements on a project. For the last three years I have been teaching the AP Computer Science Principles as well. This is a great opportunity to have my students work on their problem solving and team building skills. I earned my bachelor’s degree from Fitchburg State College in Career & Technical Education. My master’s degree in Special Education is from Bridgewater State College. Previous to teaching, I spent several years working in industry as a Technical Associate for a computer magazine. I gained invaluable knowledge about working as a team, being creative and meeting deadlines. In my spare time I enjoy some outdoor activities like paddle board, swimming and adventure parks. I love to read non-fiction books about history, visit new places and spend time with my family.
